Allusion Poems

Creative writing Bonus Challenge: Use one of the following as an allusion in a very short poem. Nurse Ratchet, "The horror, the horror," "star-crossed lovers" or any other elements from the works we've read this year. You get extra credit if you put it on the blog and read it aloud in class...

  1. It's weakness that we all try to hide
In fear they will cause our fall
    Our inner walls are built
    Like Ratched's glass window
    Unprepared to come toppling down

  2. In the faraway land of Suburbia
Or was it right next door?
    Two “star-crossed lovers” met
    Believing love more than folklore.

    Slinking visits in the night,
    Whispering kisses via phones,
Each looked to name the something
    That settled in their bones.

    And then.

Their visits became easy, monotonous, dull
    She felt indifferent,
    He, a lull.
    They quit with the phones
    and the visits at night

    And the damage was done
Could this love be done right?

  3. “The horror, the horror”

    After years of working,
    Years of laughing,
Years of making the world better,

    He lays bleeding.
    They walk by.

  4. Twelve kids laughing
    One teacher waiting
    In the room without windows
    This weekend twelve are staying
    Detention seems undeserving
The teacher seems to have won
    Who knew so much trouble
Could come from a little fun
From the fog he comes walking
As she leads them on their way
The new kid will make sure
    She doesn’t teach another day

Where is the fun in this fix?
    Tuesdays are formal
    Key cards hardly normal.
    Just like Nurse Ratched's machine
    Caught in this monotonous routine.
